How long it take to consume a specific amount of stored power in a battery over a specific amount of load.

I am making this post today as a result of a quesiton asked by one of my readers and this is what the question says

“please I would like to understand how long does it take to consume a specific amount of stored power in the power bank over a specific amount of load.
Another reader tried to answer the question which he did very well, today I want to break it down and explain in details for easy assimilation and digestion so that even the ordinary man on the street can understand.

Let’s try and answer these questions
1)     How much power is stored in 12V 200AH battery at full charge
2)     How much time will it take to comsume the power in 1 above if I have a load of 130 watt i.e. a tv set that is rated  130W

MEANING OF WATT?
Watt is a measure of power.
Watts = Amps x Volts
 W = V *A
1)     How much power is stored in 12V 200AH battery at full charge
Energy stored in a battery is measured in WATT i.e. take a look at the image of the battery below you will see 12V 200AH, (it means 12 volts and 200 amp-hour) we will use this to know the amount of power this battery can store.

From the formula above: Watts = Amps x Volts
From the battery:
Amps = 200AH
Volts = 12V
Therfore WATT = 200AH x 12V
                         = 2400WH (How come WH? The A in 200 multiply by V in 12 will turn W, mutiply by the H)
                         OR V x AH = WH

Just try and understand the the conversion

2)     How much time will it take to comsume the power in 1 above, (2400WH) if I have a load of 130 WATT i.e. a tv set that is rated 130W

Remember I need to use my TV set which is rated 130W
So 2400WH ÷ 130W = 18.4H (18.4hours)
What this simply means is that I can watch TV continously for about 18 hours
What if you dont find the watt as in the picture below.
Since Watts = Amps x Volts
so Watts = 3A x 12V = 36W
It means the power consumption of this DVD player is 36 watts

BUT, to extend the life of your battery, you are adviced to use 50% of the power or discharge 50% only, so if we want to go by that:
At 100% is the 2400WH
So at 50% discharge, we asume to use half of 2400WH which is 2400WH÷2 = 1200WH.
Therfore, if I want to prolong my battery life and check how long I can watch TV, I simply do
1200WH ÷ 130W = 9.2 hours

So I can watch TV for 9 hours

Note: if you need to use more than one gadget at a time i.e if you need to watch a good movie under the fan only, you need the TV, DVD player and the fan,

Gadgets
Power Consumption In Watts
TV
130w
DVD player
36w
Ceiling fan
60w
TOTAL
226watt
so from above and asuming 50% discharge we have

I hope this answers any question you may have about the power stored in a battery and how long you can use it to power a specific amount of load
