What You Must Know about the New MTN Lumos Yellow Box-What it can Power

So many people ask this question, how reliable is the yellow box, so with my knowledge so far with solar system setup, I have decided to put the difference to you so you can make your choice properly to avoid regrets letter in the future.

By the law of physics, 80 watt cannot carry your fridge, washing matching, bigger TV set, cooker, electric iron, Air condition, blender, hand dryer.

In this shot post, I want to answer the question and NOT to discourage you from buying the yellow box. The yellow box to my understanding can be efficient based on your power need, it is absolutely a welcome development for those who can afford it at the end of the day, I got to know it is rated to carry load of 60 watts only.
Let me break it down for you; let’s say you need to power these device in your apartment.
  • 1 laptop is approximately 65 watt
  • 1 ceiling fan which is about 60 watts
  • 1 standing fan is about 30 watts
That’s an average of 145 watt

Here is the big question, CAN THE BOX POWER THE ABOVE ITEMS? You will find out soon, let’s find out the monetary aspect of this box.

Now, this is the story behind it, according to vanguard.
“The service is provided on a lease-to- own basis and the cost is spread over a five-year term, payable in affordable installments via mobile phones from MTN accounts”.

This means that you don’t own the box outright, you make an initial payment of N26, 000 but you have to keep paying N200 for five years through airtime on your phone associated with the yellow box, now let’s do some calculations.

5 year is same as 365 x 5 = 1,825 days
Now N200 x 1825days = N 365,000

ALTERNATIVE CALCULATION:
If the daily acces fee reduces to N100
How Much You Spend In One Month (30 days)
N100 x 30 days
= N3, 000 a Month

How much you spend In 1 year (12 Months)

N3, 000 x 12 months
= N36, 000 a year

How Much You Spend In 5 Years (1825 days)

N36, 000 x 5 years
=N180, 000

So before this box can be yours you have to spend between N180, 000 to N 365,000
Here is the question, are you willing to spend that much for 80 watt panel and have 60 watt of power to use.

Well, many homes definitely need this now and will go for it, which is not bad, but where will you stand at the end of 5 years.
Will the battery bank still be good after 5 years?

Do you know that battery life is between 2 to 10 years if used appropriately, meaning you have to dicharge the battery at 50%  ?
How many persons will be able to obey and discahrge at 50%

Do you know with just N255, 000 you can setup a solar system generator of 250watts solar panel, 1500 (1.5KVA) watts inverter and 200AH battery bank to use to power so many appliances? See the table below
Battery   bank 200AH
N 115,000
Inverter (about 1.5KVA)
N 45, 000
Controller (12/24V)
N 15,000
Solar panel (250WATT)
N 75, 000
Cable (12 AWG)
N 5,000
TOTAL
N 255

With this setup, you could power any appliance less than 1500 watt but not for all day long, only for a specific period of time.

Reading to this point shows you want to know, knowledge is power so they say.

NOTE: I have not condemned this box in anyway; I only wanted to point out the difference and what you stand to gain over a long period of time and also help those ansking questions.

The table below will show you what you can power using a 60watt power from the box and what you can’t power. Check the house hold appliances below and note those below 60 watts. Those are the appliance you can power with the box.

  1. Fantastic writeup, very informative, please I would like to understand how long does it take to consume a specific amount of stored power in the power bank over a specific amount of load.

    1. Back up time varies actually. Say for instance, you have a total load of 250W at any point in time... And you have a battery capacity of say 400ah (two 200ah battery connected in parallel). Your battery charge is rated at 4800wh. (I.e 12 *400). At 50% battery discharge, you'll have 2400/250 = 9.6hrs. At 75% battery discharge, you'll have 3600÷250 = 14.4 hrs... Give or take. Optimally, 50% battery discharge is recommended. It'll help maximize the battery charge cycles over a longer time period. I hope this helps.

  3. I knew there was a catch with this Lumos thing. Just didn't sit right with me. I live with a couple friends and we talked about getting one but I had a hunch it'll be better to build one cus I remember talking to some experts about it and the price they gave really made the lumos thing not add up. So I visited a family I know has the Lumos and they were almost crying when they told me "it doesn't power anything jare, just some bulbs and the phones, the man got it so they could watch TV and feel like there's electricity(you know that feeling) but as far as I could see, it was no different from charging a couple lamps for night use" Rubbish.
You know when big companies put their hands in projects like this and smaller guys tell you "don't do it" it always sounds like hate but the truth is, they know where the trade off is. Why would I spend 4500 per month to power some bulbs, I'd rather buy some proper power credit and wait for PHCN to smile on me through the month or I'll just build one of these. I better stop typing now, I'm beginning to get upset with this thing cus I'm usually the first guy to preach sustainable energy to people, now people laugh at me when I say Lumos. Suffer!

  10. What do you mean by one obeying and discaharging at 50%

    1. It means that when your battery power is at 50%, you charge the systems until full again, before continued usage. In lay mans terms, your battery mustn't be below 50%.

  15. I would also like to add that the impact of Solar power on nature compared to the impact of conventional electricity production are very minimal. As per the Energy Research Center of Netherlands, electricity generation from coal contributes 96% to 98% more greenhouse gases than solar power.

  31. It's like you said earlier depends on what you are using it for, it's like a backup to nepa light, it's not like the MTN lumio is all bad, nothing last for ever bro, even your own you claim to be working has it's own disadvantages, but am more relaxed to be paying small small than to bring out 250k e no easy, we have other bills to pay, if we all have the means to do that, we know which is best.. thanks for ur advice.. but I prefer this plan cos there's no money on ground
